Access and passibility of the route are very dependent on water level. The New River can be accessed from Carr Bridge.The route, a twisting waterway with numerous channels, is too challenging for novices. Most visitors put in canoes at Carr Bridge and paddle down about six miles to old Magnolia Landing (not marked on newer maps). It enters from the north and flows through the cypress and gum swamps, relatively thin in understory, that dominate the Wilderness. The New River, by contrast, is lined with beautiful Atlantic white cedar. Heavy rainfall, especially in summer, combines with heat and humidity to provide the ideal environment for biting insects. Hiking can be dangerous and is not for the faint of heart. Barely peeking above the standing water are many small, isolated islands. Unless you know the many different channels along this twisted route, you could get yourself into serious trouble.Florida doesn't get any more remote than this: no trails, no old roads, no people. Most of the area is Mud Swamp, a region of very poorly drained clay-rich soil that holds more water than nearby Bradwell Bay Wilderness. They put in near Carr Bridge and float the six miles down to old Magnolia Landing (which is only on the older maps). Most visitors come in on canoes or kayaks. The underbrush in this area tends to be relatively thin but that doesn't make getting around any easier. New River flows in from the north and until it hits the swamp, the river banks are lined with Atlantic white cedar. Hiking and hunting in the area are extremely challenging. There are no old roads and no trails, anywhere. Among the wiregrass you'll also come across pygmy and eastern diamondback rattlesnakes. You'll also find a fair few alligators and even some black bear, wild boar and white-tailed deer in the area. This is another place in Florida where humans are horribly outnumbered by biting insects (so the best time to visit is February). Scattered around the swamp are numerous small islands and hardwood hammocks. Water depths vary from a few inches to several feet, depending on the season. Mud Swamp is essentially a large pool of standing water held in place by the clay-rich soil beneath it and constantly fed by the New River. ![]() Mud Swamp/New River Wilderness is an 8,090-acre refuge designated by Congress on September 28, 1984, in Apalachicola National Forest.
