Much of that can be laid at the feet of director Darren Lynn Bousman, who returns to the series after directing Saws II, III and IV, upping the style factor but not much else. While he’s still a capable lead, that’s often more down to his innate charisma than the demands and direction of the part.Ĭop Trap Claptrap: But apart from the cast, and the fact that we’ve moved fully past Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw and his direct acolytes to full-on Jigsaw copycats (we don’t even get Billy the Puppet), the rest of Spiral is pure-strain Saw sequel, for all the good and ill that engenders. In some scenes, he’s rattling off Tarantino-esque monologues about Forrest Gump and referencing New Jack City (a film in which he stars) like he’s in one of his standup routines in others, he’s barking orders at his fellow cops and dashing from one place to the next in full hero-cop mode. To his credit, Rock throws himself into the scowling seriousness of the role, though sometimes his instincts seem to miscalculate a bit. It’s a nifty byproduct of the whole thing coming from Rock’s desire to make a Saw movie: Watching Rock stalk warehouses and police offices, Spiral feels at least a little bit like Rock’s Saw fan film. To its credit, it elevates itself, particularly in the first half, with some inspired stunt casting: Rock, Minghella, and Jackson (despite his zeal to do everything from Marvel to Capital One commercials) are a big step up from the Canadian day players of the previous entries in the series. Now he and his fresh-faced new partner ( Max Minghella) are tapped to track down who’s dispatching their fellow officers in increasingly mechanical and grisly ways, and hope they don’t end up in the crosshairs.Įverybody Hates Chris: Having now seen Spiral, I can safely say that I still have no idea what “The Book of Saw” refers to - but it sure does sound like a nifty way to give the long-running torture porn franchise a veneer of respectability and prestige, which Spiral feels like it’s going for. Jackson), already a pariah for turning in a crooked cop several years prior. Hot on the case is an idealistic but disillusioned cop named Zeke Banks ( Chris Rock), the son of the department’s former chief ( Samuel L. Now, a copycat is on the loose, and this time he’s targeting crooked cops, with a mission to “reform the police” (more on that later) and purge it of its corruption. The Pitch: It’s been a decade since John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, spent years terrorizing unsuspecting citizens with a dizzying, disgusting array of homespun torture traps meant to enact karmic justice for their personal failings. ![]() ![]() ![]() Subscribe to a new way of homeschooling and save money with AOP coupons from .ĪOP stands for Alpha Omega Publications, a leading resource for educational Christian material founded in 1977. Those who get their “wow”-effect from everything the natural world has to offer, however, should definitely consider E-Line latest. There is very little action in the traditional sense in Beyond Blue – much of the appeal comes from an appreciation of the natural world you get to be a part of in this game, so if you saw Blue Planet and didn’t care for it then you might struggle with this game as well. This isn’t something you want to rush through – enjoy the journey, don’t be in a hurry to get to the destination. ![]() These clips are gorgeous, as is the in-game presentation of Beyond Blue – Mirai glides through the water smoothly, and the world around her is teeming with life. The latter is done by checking out the in game “insights”, which are enriched with short clips that were originally part of the Blue Planet series. In between the various dives you conduct over the course of the somewhat short story (the game can be completed within the scope of four hours), you get to rest inside a small submersible, chat with your teammates and family members, and review what you’ve found out. Your fellow scientists will thus remind you of your objectives, making for a relatively streamlined experience even though it’s set in an open underwater world. The voiceovers that fuel the narrative try to keep you on track though, and a lot of them are tied to Mirai conducting a live stream for followers of the research team. You can record and catalogue much of the living world that you find, exploring a little as you veer away from your objectives a little. Beyond Blue keeps this aspect very implicit and retains a firm focus on the natural world and the animals that live in it – those relationships and emotions like awe and wonder being far more important to the experience. Following the story cues, you uncover more and more about the way they communicate, where they migrate and the dangers they face.Ī game based on a nature documentary is of course going to be at risk of turning into a bit of a guilt trip about the state of the natural world. ![]() The story takes place in the near future, so you have access to some impressive technology to carry out your work and follow a particular family of whales in which a young calf was recently born. It’s been a bit of a wait since then, but the full game is out now, giving us the opportunity to see how the game plays and how it ties into the licensed source material.įrom that perspective, our journey with the game has come full circle. The “Blue” portion of the title referred to the BBC’s amazing Blue Planet documentary series though, which serves as a backdrop of sorts to the game.Ī year later, we got our first glimpse of actual gameplay and were even able to go hands on and experience a bit of the in-game narrative – revealing an emphasis on exploration and wonder rather than thrilling action. It’s been almost two years since we first heard about Beyond Blue, when it was presented during 2018’s trade shows in teaser form – with little more to see than a few screenshots and a brief explanation. ![]() After a somewhat lengthy wait, Beyond Blue by E-Line Media has finally been released! Perhaps one of the more fancier-looking fish and chips shops around town, Off The Pier is the Williamstown go-to for golden crunched fish tucked away in a Victorian-era building just metres from the water. If you're keen for flake, with a potato cake, dim sim, and minimum chips this summer, here are the best fish and chips you'll find in Melbourne and Victoria for 2023: The Best Fish And Chip Shops In Melbourne But there's something else that makes every summer just that little bit more great-fish and chips. Sunshine, good vibes, days at the beach, days at the pool, more daylight, the list goes on and on. In short: a minor miracle.Summer brings a lot of great things into our lives. There is a sprig of mint to signal it was made by someone who cares. The crunch of the well-seasoned batter yields to perfectly molten banana, the richness of the caramel is cut through by the sandy warmth of the cinnamon. Here they arrive like yogurtlu adana in their ovular tray, logs of carefully battered banana, not a trace of grease in sight, cheap whipped cream as yoghurt, cinnamon standing in for chilli flakes and a drizzling of caramel. ![]() Oddly, the banana fritters impress the most. Despite being voted #1 on Tripadvisor in the days when this meant slightly more than nothing, the fish and chips themselves are great, if sometimes needing more heavy handed seasoning. The reasons for this are unclear, although it doesn’t take a detective to work out that a group of people, who could batter seafood before they could speak, came over to the UK and quickly saw an easy way to assimilate into the culture The Golden Chippy massively breaks this strong tradition: it is. It’s a small quirk of London that nearly every major chippy - Toff’s, Fish Central, Golden Hind, Brockley’s Rock - is run by Greek-Cypriots. While the fish is merely decorative, the chicken is unexpectedly great - an unholy matrimony of beef and chicken fat, all puffed and crisped up like a confit. It’s possible to get the works for about £7-8 sitting down, less if foregoing mushy peas, which would be a mistake: the mushy peas are an essential reminder that all brief joy can only be put into context next to the unremitting blandless of existence. Even the tallow is questionable: is that a particularly beefy tang or just old oil? The experience is what it’s all about here: the formica, the black and white tiles, the cod in bowler hat mascot, the fact that The Fryer’s Delight is not a chippy, but a caff that happens to serve fish and chips. The batter on the fish always looks slightly like a fossilised rock, and if the chips weren’t fried in beef dripping they would be middling. To nip this in the bud: the fish and chips are alright. Like most of London’s pie and mash shops, The Fryer’s Delight is one of those places that should be treasured for its cultural importance, against the secret wish that it were better than it actually is. It may be childhood nostalgia, it may be the cholesterol, but this is one of the few meals left that still feels like a treat every time. So pile on all the condiments, chuck in some mushy peas, some pickled wallys, bread and butter, a battered saveloy. No more having to eyeball the rack and work out if that haddock really did come out of the fryer two minutes ago. No more waiting on the counter going stale. The pandemic has another unintended, wholly-positive side-effect: the lack of demand for fish and chips means that every single fillet of fish, every single golden chip, is being fried fresh to order. ![]() For this, it is imperative that the chippy be within 5-10 minutes of home, within the radius of the one government-mandated walk per day. The existence of great local fish and chips shops acknowledges a truth: The best way to consume fish and chips is ideally lounging horizontally, watching something bad on TV. Whole areas of London - Muswell Hill, Brockwell, Bromley - dine out on one good fish and chip shop that locals can proudly claim as their own. ![]() Fish and chips is home food it’s food that feeds a community. But the scarcity of great fish and chip shops in the centre is also proof that no Londoner has ever found themselves there, thinking: “I’d love some fish and chips right now”. That London’s fish and chip scene can’t compete with those in the north of England, Scotland, or the coastal towns where salty chips and saline air provide an experience tethered to geography is obvious. It’s time to have an honest conversation about the London chippy. Anyway, I learnt that before the Vietnamese went into action they popped a little silver Buddha in their mouths. Their culture of Coke cans and ice creams actually made them smell. They could literally smell the Americans coming through the jungle. The Vietnamese were portrayed as being very craftful people who treated their fighting as an art. I saw a programme with a camera man on the front line in Vietnam. I wanted to write a song that could somehow convey the whole thing, so we set it in the jungle and had helicopters, crickets and little Balinese frogs. They wore a little silver Buddha on a chain around their neck and when they went into action they'd pop it into their mouth, so if they died they'd have Buddha on their lips. It was devastating, because you got the impression that the Americans were so heavy and awkward, and the Vietnamese were so beautiful and all getting wiped out. The Americans were these big, fat, pink, smelly things who the Vietnamese could smell coming for miles because of the tobacco and cologne. An album that is not covered much on the airwaves, it is a shame more people do not go deep with an incredible release. I think I have only heard it played on the radio once.
